Self-Defense has Nothing to do with Fear

The news and media constantly remind us that the world is a scary place. Its easy to become fearful of every shadowy alley, every park at night and even our homes no longer feel safe. With the world being as frightening as it is, you might think that we would be embracing this fear in order to sell self defense classes. We don’t deny that everyone needs to protect themselves and bad things certainly happen. However, we want to know, are you prepared to give up that fear? Are you truly ready to feel secure?

In our self defense class we stress that no action to protect yourself can come from a place of fear. Fear causes hesitation, fear makes us sloppy, fear makes every situation fight or flight. We all know what happens when people act out of a fear, people get hurt. Sure, we want you to protect yourself. You might have to inflict pain on another person in order to do that. But don’t forget that self-defense is also about minimum required force. We want everyone to know that being able to fight is one thing, the confidence to look at a dangerous situation rationally and calmly is something else. Together these things add up to self-defense and real security.

So don’t take a self defense class in order to fight the next time you feel afraid. Take self defense so next time you won’t be afraid. Fear will always be a natural part of life. However, next time your friends or family have to experience this negative emotion, you can be the calm in the storm, their rock. This what a self-defense class is all about.
